I thought I'd start a thread for the other band at the top of my music list - Leaves' Eyes. It's quite different from Dargaard in many ways, but in a lot of ways I find it to be similar as well. The genre is hard to pin down. I've heard it described as "European Progressive Rock" and as "Goth Rock" and as "Symphonic Metal" and i'm sure there are other possible labels as well. Other artists that are associated as being in the same sort of style/genre are Elis, Nightwish, Darkwell, Epica, Midnattsol, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, etc. I listen to all of these artists, and I find most of them enjoyable (some much more than others), yet nothing compares to Leaves' Eyes.
Liv Kristine is the lead vocalist. She has a beautiful voice, trained to sing in a high operatic style. This voice, sometimes described as "angelic," contrasts nicely with the heavy sound of the metal music. Alexander Krull, Liv's husband, is the main person behind the group, responsible for most of the production, writing, etc, and he occasionally inserts his own death grolls in on some of the tracks. Originally I really disliked these death grunts, but they're nothing like the kind you hear in classic Death Metal. And they are used sparingly, only being inserted on tracks where it creates a very dichotomous effect between Liv and Alex's vocals.
One of my favorite songs is "Misseri" off the "Vinland Saga" album. Much like my favorite Dargaard songs, there is a majestic somberness to the sound that really pulls you in. It's one of their lighter tracks, of which they do have quite a few, and which I think is fantastic. Their theme albums usually deal with the early medieval Norsemen, and so you get some interesting folklore out of the music too, which is another favorite aspect for me.
"Solemn Sea" is probably my favorite track off of the album "Lovelorn." It's one of those songs with a perfect dichotomy between Liv and Alex - and their vocals fit the music in an amazing way. Another example of this pefection is the track "The Thorn" off the "Vinland Saga" album. Those two have truly great chemistry, and I can attest that this is true in person, too, for I actually got to see them live once about a year ago.
I could go on about Leaves' Eyes for quite a while. They really do everything right, at least in my opinion. The genre of music they're in can often lead to uninspired music, but Leaves' (the same as Dargaard) impress me the most because of how truly *inspired* they sound.
Well, I thought I'd throw this out there and see if any other Dargaard fans enjoy Leaves' Eyes as well.
I get to see them live again in April. I'm pretty excited, and I'll be sure to post about the experience when it's over
