Let me start by saying there are only a VERY select few "symphonic black metal" bands that I like (Obtained Enslavement and Diabolical Masquerade, for example), through I must recommend Carach Angren as being one of those few, to both fans of the genre and to those who, like myself, don't really care for most of the genre's well-known bands (Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth and so on). Carach Angren truly transcend the typical boundaries of the genre, with atmospheric abilities reminding one of the fairytales, the paranormal and, on their newest album, nautical disaster. The orchestral arrangements are utterly brilliant and layered very much like film scores and, to a lesser extent, baroque-era classical music. I cannot stress the compositional brilliance of this band enough, it's really quite outstanding for a newer metal band to have such bravado and elegance integrated into their otherwise abrasive songs; truly outstanding! To those whom are interested, here's a rather low-quality Youtube clip of one of the songs from their latest album, Death Came Through A Phantom Ship: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvIICgzHOUA... any fans here?

I'm a Carach Angren fan too ! Their music is very narrative, as it makes me dream, go to another dimension... They perfectly make the seventeenth century sound ^^ ! I have a musical project in the same way, inspired by them, have an ear on it and comment www.myspace.com/herbertwestmusic
